Manhattan Beach vs. Hermosa Beach vs. Redondo Beach: Which South Bay City Is Right for You?
Three beach cities, one incredible stretch of coast, and each has its own personality and price. Manhattan Beach is the highest-priced of the three (median around $3.35M) and is best known for its top-rated schools and walkable downtown by the pier. Hermosa Beach is the most laid-back and lively (around $2.3M), built around volleyball and Pier Avenue. Redondo Beach is the most attainable and family-oriented (around $1.6M), with townhomes and condos offering the easiest entry to the coast.
If you're relocating to the South Bay or trading up within it, choosing between the three "beach cities" is the first real decision. Here's how I help clients think it through.

Manhattan Beach: top schools and a walkable downtown
Manhattan Beach is the most sought-after of the three, and the pricing reflects it. The draws are the Sand Section and walk streets, the friendly downtown by the pier full of shops and restaurants, and, for a lot of my clients, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, one of the most sought-after districts in the area.
You'll pay the most here, with a median around $3.35 million and more for Sand Section and walk-street homes close to the water. If top schools and a walkable, family-friendly downtown are near the top of your list, Manhattan Beach is usually the answer.
Hermosa Beach: the fun one
Hermosa is the most laid-back and social of the three, with beach volleyball culture, walk streets, and the buzzing Pier Avenue scene of bars, restaurants, and nightlife. It's compact and genuinely fun, and it draws people who want to be in the middle of the action.
With a median around $2.3 million, it sits between its two neighbors on price. Hermosa tends to appeal to buyers who prioritize lifestyle and energy: younger families, professionals, and anyone who wants to walk out the door into the heart of beach-city life.
Redondo Beach: the value play
Redondo is the most attainable and family-oriented, and it offers the widest variety of housing: single-family homes, townhomes, and condos, plus the harbor and pier as a local hub. It's larger and more residential, with pockets that feel quieter and more suburban than its neighbors.
At a median around $1.6 million, with condos and townhomes offering entry points below that, Redondo is where a lot of buyers get their foothold in the South Bay. If you want beach-city life with more space and more attainable pricing, start here.
How to choose: the questions I ask clients
Are schools the priority? Manhattan Beach's district is the marquee draw, though all three offer strong schools.
What's your budget, and how close to the sand do you need to be? Proximity to the water is the single biggest price driver in every one of these cities, so you can find real value by moving a few blocks back.
What's your daily rhythm? Walkable and family-centered (Manhattan), social and lively (Hermosa), or spacious and practical (Redondo)?
What kind of home? If you want a condo or townhome, Redondo has the most options; Manhattan and Hermosa are more single-family and walk-street.
There's no wrong answer here. These are three of the most enduringly desirable coastal markets in the region, and demand stays strong across all of them through market cycles. It comes down to fit.
